AI regulatory sandboxes. Member states must have national AI regulatory sandboxes operational. (Moved from August 2026.)

Annex III high-risk rules. The broadest category — AI used in employment, credit, education, law enforcement, migration, critical infrastructure, and biometrics — must comply with risk management, technical documentation, conformity assessment, and human oversight. This is the key deadline for most organisations. (Postponed from August 2026 by the Digital Omnibus.)

Aug 2028

Annex I embedded AI. High-risk AI embedded in regulated products — medical devices, machinery, vehicles, toys — must comply. (Postponed from August 2027.)

Digital Omnibus published. Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 was published in the Official Journal on 24 July 2026 and entered into force on 27 July 2026. It formally amends the AI Act, postponing the high-risk compliance deadline from August 2026 to December 2027.
